Solids, e.g. pharmaceutical tablets, are prepared for automatic analysis by admitting a predetermined quantity of liquid to a container, adding a predetermined quantity of the solid thereto, withdrawing at least part of the resultant mixture for analysis and repeating these steps for a series of solid samples, utilizing a single container. As shown in Fig. 1, solid samples in a series of receptacles 128 pivotably supported in a circular row on a plate intermittently rotated by means of a Geneva gear, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), are emptied in one position of the plate into a shoot 12 and the solids discharged into container 14, a predetermined amount of liquid having been already admitted thereto by means of metering pump 56 from reservoir 54 through tube 16. A stirrer 30 is provided. A flexible tube pump draws mixture from container 14 by means of tube 38, the mixture being formed into segments divided by gas bubbles formed by injection of air from pump tube 50 at orifice 46. The segmented stream has a reagent added thereto through line 234 and is thereafter mixed in coil 242 and passed to dialyser 244 where solid materials are removed and liquid passes into a gas-segmented stream containing a colour producing reagent and thence through mixing coil 256 and heating coil 260 to a colorimeter. A tube 220 leading to a jet 214 and a ring of jets in the container 14 is provided for the supply of rinsing water to the inverted receptacle 128 and the container. The lower part of the container has a valve arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), operated by suction applied through line 102 by means of pump 122 whereby wash liquid may be withdrawn through line 110, also by said pump 122. Valves 124, 226, 230 and 232, motors for the stirrer 30, pump 56, and the Geneva gear, are programmed to operate sequentially by means of a number of cams on a rotary shaft: motors for the wash water pump 276, pump 122 and flexible tube pump run continuously while the apparatus is in use (Fig. 8, not shown).
