The invention relates to a process for closing a metal container (1) by a lid (10) consisting of a bottom (11), a side wall (12) and a rim (13); according to the process a sealing joint (17) placed on the rim (13) is located on the outline (16) of opening the container (1), and when the lid (10) is placed on the container (1), a pressure is applied to the lid (10) so that the sealing joint (17) is compressed between the container (1) and the rim (13) of the lid and it is locked on the container (1) by flanging the side wall (12) of the lid (10). The device for applying the closing process comprises a disk (24) having a step (25) along its outline and an inner part (26) having such shape and size that, when the step (25) rests on the rim (13) of the lid (10), it enters the opening (16) of the container (1), the disk (24) being provided with some arms (28) pivoting about an axis (29) which is parallel to the plane of the disk and whereonto there are fastened some punches (27) by means of which the flanging of the side wall (12) of the lid (10) is achieved.
