<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily producing a quaternary ammonium salt having an ester group while providing a small amount of by-products. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the quaternary ammonium salt obtained by esterifying the whole or a part of hydroxy groups in a quaternary ammonium salt (1) involves reacting the quaternary ammonium salt (1) with a fatty acid anhydride (2). (In formulas, X<SP>-</SP>is an anion; R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-6C alkyl group or a benzyl group; R<SP>2</SP>is a 1-6C alkyl group or -(C<SB>n</SB>H<SB>2n</SB>O)<SB>q</SB>-H; R<SP>3</SP>is -(C<SB>m</SB>H<SB>2m</SB>O)<SB>r</SB>-H; R<SP>4</SP>is -(C<SB>p</SB>H<SB>2p</SB>O)<SB>s</SB>-H or -C<SB>t</SB>H<SB>2t</SB>-Y-COR<SP>5</SP>; n, m, p and t are each a number of 2-4; q, r and s are each a number of 1-5; Y is -O- or -NH-; R<SP>5</SP>is a 7-35C alkyl or alkenyl group; R<SP>6</SP>is a 7-35C alkyl or alkenyl group). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO.
