The device has adapters (2a, 2b, 2c), each having a user name (ID1, ID2, ID3) and interfaced with a digital apparatus e.g. personal computer. A base (1) has a routing unit (8) for routing local and bilateral signals and a multiplexer-demultiplexer for multiplexing or demultiplexing the signals. The routing unit has an addressing table for providing a correspondence between the user name and wavelength of signals. An independent claim is also included for a process of transmitting signals.
