Essential oil from Monarda fistulosa, useful as antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-acne agent, in human or veterinary medicine or cosmetics

Essential oil (A) obtained from the plant Monarda fistulosa is new. An independent claim is also included for a method for preparing (A). ACTIVITY : Antibacterial; Fungicide; Antiseborrheic; Dermatological; Virucide. Portions (50 Microl) of (A) were used to impregnate sterile filter disks, then these placed on petri dishes of nutrient media that were inoculated with various microorganisms. After culture at 20-25 [deg]C for 24 hours (bacteria), 48 hours (Saccharomyces cerevisiae or 72 hours (Alternaria alternata), the diameters (mm) of the inhibition zones were measured. They were 44-47 for Staphylococcus aureus; 44 for Bacillus subtilis; 41 Enterobacter cloacae; 38 for Proteus mirabilis; 21 for Pseudomonas aeruginosa; 56 for S. cerevisiae and 52 for A. alternata. The corresponding figures for 50 mu g chloramphenicol were 19-22; 18; 25; 23; 8; 0 and 0. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
