A cell for the electrowinning of aluminium from alumina dissolved in a fluoride-containing molten electrolyte (30), using anodes (10) that are based on alloys of iron and at least one of nickel and cobalt to produce aluminium of low contamination and of commercial high grade quality, each anode (10) having an oxygen evolving electrochemically active anode surface, the cell comprises a cathode (20) having a drained cathode surface (22) and operating at reduced temperature without formation of a crust or ledge of solidified electrolyte, wherein the molten electrolyte (30) is substantially saturated with alumina, particularly on the electrochemically active anode surface (16), and contains dissolved species of at least one major metal that is present at the surface of the anodes in an atomic and/or ionic form in an amount of at least 25% of the total amount of metal atoms and/or ions present at the surface of the anodes and that is selected from iron, nickel and cobalt , the dissolved species are present in the molten electrolyte (30) at or nearly at saturation concentration.
