PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the presence or absence of sheets at all times in spite of the state of the sheets in a sheet detection device used for an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises a sheet loading part on which recording paper is put in the form of sheets. The sheet detection device 20 comprises a swing body 25, and the swing body 25 comprises a detection piece 22 extending parallel with the carrying direction of the sheets and projected from the sheet loading surface of the sheet loading part. The swing body is swingably disposed on a pivot shaft 24 parallel with the carrying direction of the sheets, rotated around a pivot according to the movement of the detection piece, and detects based on the swing of the swing body for a transmission type sensor 31 whether or not the sheets are present on the sheet loading surface.
