PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise bill discrimination capability, in which authenticity determination results for bills were conventionally uncertain, to improve the authenticity determination capability. SOLUTION: A bill handling apparatus has a detector to detect features of bills conveyed by a conveying mechanism, an amplifier to amplify signals acquired from the detector, an A/D converter to convert analog signals, which are amplified in the amplifier, to digital signals, and a determination means for determining the authenticity of paper sheets using the signals that are A/D converted by the A/D converter. The bill handling apparatus is provided with a controller to change signal reading accuracy of the detector, and if uncertainty is determined by the determination means, the amplification ratio or resolution of detector is changed so that the determination capability for paper sheets becomes high by the controller.
