PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for setting a device control program in a way that enables an optimum operational mode to be set without increasing the volume of a device's control program. SOLUTION: The method for setting the device control program of an information processing system consisting of a host computer and a device includes a step in which the host computer obtains from the device the information about a plurality of data specifying the plurality of operational modes of the control program run by the host computer; a step in which the host computer determines which of the plurality of data should be obtained, based on the operational mode of the host computer and the information obtained from the device; a step in which the host computer obtains from the device the data specifying the operational mode to be obtained; and a step in which the host computer sets the operational mode of the control program based on the data specifying the operational mode obtained.
