A rotary encoder comprising a signal generating section (2) generating a sine wave signal of N periods per single revolution of a motor shaft (4), an operating means for determining the rotational angle value of the shaft (4) based on the sine wave signal, an EEPROM (37) where the error value of a measured rotational angle for single revolution of the shaft (4) is divided in relation to the N periods thus setting a plurality of first angular regions (i), substantially central angular region of the angular regions (i) is divided into a plurality of second angular regions (j), and an error value substantially corresponding to the central angle of the angular regions (j) is stored in association with the rotational angular value, and means for correcting the rotational angular value by reading out an error value from the EEPROM (37) in association with the rotational angular value.
