[Also in Division H1] A galvanic cell Z (or stack of cells) having contacts at each end is sealed in a tubular jacket of synthetic thermoplastic material by inserting the cell into the jacket so that a cell contact K touches external contact A1 embedded in the end wall S1 of the jacket; supporting the jacket around a marginal portion of wall S1; inserting into a terminal portion of the jacket an end wall S2 of synthetic thermoplastic material having an embedded external contact A2 which touches cell contact B; pressing wall S2 into the terminal portion so that transmitted pressure elastically arches wall S1 away from cell Z; welding wall S2 to the adjoining terminal portion; and releasing the pressure whereby the elastic return to shape of wall S 1 produces a substantial contact pressure between the cell contacts K, B and the external contacts A1, A2. As shown, contact K is the free end of a carbon electrode and contact B is the end of a zinc can; walls S1, S2 are of low pressure polythene and the tubular portion M of the jacket is of high pressure polythene. Pressure is applied by ram 5 which is locked in position at a predetermined pressure by wedges 7, 8. Welding mould 10 is lowered over the end of the cell to a position determined by wedge 7 acting as a stop for cross-beam 15. The mould is heated by contact with heating block 17, the lower part of the mould being continuously cooled so that only the end wall S2 and terminal portion of the jacket are heated and these are rapidly cooled after the raising of the heating block. Alternatively the mould may be heated directly by a highfrequency current or it may be made with a heat-conductive welding zone and an insulating lower zone and be heated and cooled by the application of hot and cold bodies alternately. The moving parts of the apparatus may be actuated by pneumatic cylinders 6, 9, 16, 21 or by cams.
