PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain an on-track state without performing a tracking servo control using a servo pattern which is formed on a discrete track part. SOLUTION: When a magnetic head is made on-track with respect to an optional one track T1 in a plurality of tracks T1-T3 as to a discrete track medium 8 whereon the plurality of magnetically separated tracks T1-T3 are formed on a partial area of its surface, after the magnetic head is made on-track to a partial section on an optional one track T1, the servo pattern B at the inner peripheral side and the servo pattern C at the outer peripheral side for maintaining the on-track state to this partial section are recorded on a non-track forming area of the discrete track medium 8 along a locus of the magnetic head, and also the magnetic head is maintained to the on-track state by utilizing the servo patterns B, C.
