PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce lighting failure in polarity inversion of a low frequency rectangular wave and smoothly move from glow discharge to arc discharge after lighting without increasing component stress or enlarging the size of a component. SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with a dc power source 1; series transistors Q1, Q2; an inductor L1 and a high pressure discharge lamp DL connecting in parallel series capacitors C1, C2, and connected in series to between the connecting point of the transistors Q1, Q2 and the connecting point of the capacitors C1, C2; and a capacitor C3 connected in parallel to the high pressure discharge lamp DL, and the capacities of the capacitors C1, C2 are made different so that both end voltages of the capacitors C1, C2 differ each other.
