PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a variable valve system lightweight or small while enhancing its reliability. SOLUTION: In the variable valve system, a rocking cam 5 lifting a valve 2 and an outer ring 7 fitted on an eccentric ring 6 of a camshaft 3 are connected with a link 8, and displacement of the outer ring 7 is restricted by a restricting means. A connecting pin 33 connecting the outer ring 7 and the link 8 is made to move on a circulating locus A, and the link 8 is made to move in a state of keeping a form along a circular arc of a rocking locus of the connecting pin 31 for the rocking cam 5 and the link 8.
