<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water cleaning method which, in treating pond water, river water, lake or marsh water, or water after the secondary treatment in a sewage treatment facility with a combination of a phosphorus adsorbent and porous concrete blocks, can efficiently remove phosphate ions and nitrogen in a short time by treating the water first with the phosphorus adsorbent and then biologically treating the water treated with the phosphorus adsorbent with a biological membrane on the porous concrete, and to provide a water cleaning apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The water cleaning method comprises treating untreated water first with a purification tank packed with the phosphorus adsorbent and treating the treated water in a cleaning tank in which porous concrete blocks are set.
