PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a parallel subword comparison instruction for enabling efficient comparison of blocks of an image and a relevant operation. SOLUTION: The present invention provides parallel subword (for example, comparison) instruction (or group of such instructions) for selecting result register subword position for results of instructions. A specialized "shift" instruction for enabling results of a plurality of parallel subword instructions of conventional technique to combine is made unnecessary by this new instruction. Thus, programming becomes easy and performance is improved.
