PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply set distances between a radiation source and a subject and between the subject and an X-ray image reading means and to prevent a mistake operation at photographing time. SOLUTION: The radiation image photographing apparatus includes a small focus radiation source 7, a subject holding member 4, a radiation image reading means 8, a radiation image reading means holding member 31, a recognition means 35 for recognizing the length of the side of the radiation image reading means 8, a distance sensing means for sensing a distance R1 between the small focus radiation source 7 and the subject holding member 4 and a distance R2 between the subject holding member 4 and the radiation image reading means 8, a distance changing means for changing the distance R1, distance R2, and a control means for operating the distance changing means. When the lengths of the sides opposed to each other with a parallel relation of an illumination field and the radiation image reading means 8 are radiation image reading means sides L1, L1' and the lengths of the sides of the radiation field sides are L2, L2', a magnification ratio M2 is a smaller one of the values when L1/L2 is compared with L1'/L2', and the control means operates the distance changing means so as to satisfy a formula of the magnification ratio M2≤M1=(R1+R2)/R1.
