PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device and an image pickup method in which a dynamic range is suppressed from being lowered even on the assumption that coupling capacitance is present in an integrated circuit. SOLUTION: In the image pickup method in the solid-state image pickup device wherein a plurality of pixel cells are connected to a common output line, one pixel cell is selected (a), a difference between a reference potential (b) of the output line when the selected pixel cell is defined as a reference, and the signal potential (d) of the output line when the pixel cell outputs a signal in accordance with a quantity of received light, is measured. The selection of the pixel cell is then canceled (f) and after the measurement and before the cancellation, the potential of the output line is moved closer to the reference potential (e).
