PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader and an image forming apparatus for enhancing operability or workability at the time of image formation by appropriately selecting operation processes according to an aspect of the image formation. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with an original feeding part which sequentially feeds a plurality of originals loaded on an original loading part toward an original reading part 500 and reads original images by an original reading part. The image reader is provided with an original detection means 610 which detects presence/absence of the original loaded on the original loading part, an operation means 400 which performs an operation instruction of starting of reading of an original image from the outside, a mode selection means 400 which selectively performs operation specification of a first mode for performing sequential feeding of the originals and reading of the the respective original images by the original reading part in response to an operation to the operation means and a second mode for performing the sequential feeding of the originals and the reading of the respective original images by the original reading part in response to detection of the presence/absence of the originals by the original detection means and a control means 21 which executes processing of the specified mode whenever the original is loaded on the original loading part.
