PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ink jet recorder in which the density of each color and the total color tone of a recorded image due to different recording media are made uniform. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder comprises a recording head 9 capable of varying the quantity of ink for forming one dot, a converting section 4 for converting input image data into data of multilevel halftone pixel value for each pixel, a pixel dividing processing section 5 for dividing each pixel into a predetermined number of pixels and assigning each divided pixel with a required quantity of ink based on the pixel value before dividing the pixel, a reference table 6 for associating the pixel value before dividing the pixel with the quantity of ink being assigned to the divided pixel, and a head driving section 8 for driving the recording head 9 such that a dot is formed by ejecting the assigned quantity of ink to each pixel divided at the pixel dividing section.
