PURPOSE: A method for controlling the distance between vehicles is provided to improve riding comfort by repressing the generation of unnecessary deceleration shock caused by a sudden deceleration. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling the distance between vehicles is composed of steps for deciding if a preceding vehicle exists or not by detecting a radar signal(S200,S201); deciding a control acceleration by computing a target acceleration for controlling distance and speed by determining that the preceding vehicle is within a distance control region, and then returning with executing throttle or brake controls(S202,S204,S205,S206); deciding the preceding vehicle is in a pre-set access limit region(S203); and calculating the target acceleration for controlling the distance if in the access limit region, computing a minimum acceleration for keeping over the access limit distance if not in the access limit region, and correspondingly, performing the throttle or brake controls(S207,S208).
