PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which is compact, of low loss, and with cost reduction. SOLUTION: A back converter circuit is PWM controlled, and an alternating current voltage of, for instance, 200 V is inputted on a next-step inverter circuit. Before a lamp 50 is lit, the inverter circuit directly inputs the 200-V alternating current voltage on a capacitor C4. On the other hand, a high-voltage trigger-pulse generating circuit outputs a voltage of 350 V necessary for lighting the lamp 50 and charges the capacitor C4. Since the 200-V voltage is supplied to an input side of the inverter circuit and the 350-V voltage to an output side, a semiconductive electric element such as a MOSFET with a voltage resistance of 150 V or more, or preferably 200 V or more is fitted to the inverter circuit, so that the semiconductive electric element shall share the burden of the 150-V voltage when the inverter circuit outputs the 200-V voltage.
