PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve startability when an engine is automatically restarted after the engine is automatically stopped once in idling or the like. SOLUTION: An engine starting system of the present invention has an ECU 30 constituting a restart control means performing a control of restart of the engine. The ECU 30 firstly makes an exhaust valve of an exhaust cylinder in engine stop in a closed state when the engine is restarted, and supplies fuel to a cylinder and performs forced ignition for combustion to move a piston in a reverse rotation direction, and supplies fuel to a cylinder in an expansion stroke in engine stop and moves the piston in a normal rotation direction by ignition and combustion in the cylinder after reverse rotation. Further, in the engine starting system, the restart control means controls to supply fuel to a cylinder that will be in an expansion stroke in a second process, and to execute ignition and combustion in the second process.
