PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium carrying mechanism for an ink jet printer capable of easily and rapidly changing a medium carrying belt without any trouble by any body. SOLUTION: A middle portion of a belt 10 supported in a circulating manner around the circumference of a drive belt 40 and the circumference of a driven belt 50 is divided into front and back portions, and a part 12 of the belt divided into the front and back portions is releasably coupled with each other by a joint means 70. By releasing the joint means 70, the belt 10 is detached from the circumference of the drive roller 40 and the circumference of the driven roller 50, or the changing belt 10 opened in an open-belt manner is passed through and wound around the drive roller 40 and the driven roller 50, and connected in a loop by the joint means 70 so that the belt 70 is supported in a circulating manner around the circumference of the drive roller 40 and the driven roller 50.
