[Class 83 (iii).] In a milling, boring, reaming, or like cutter of the type having a number of inserted wedgeshaped cutters e each secured in position in the cutter body a by a locking- wedge k, the locking-wedge is held against both lateral and radial movement by engagement with one side of the recess b in the cutter body. The recesses b, preferably non-radial, are of uniform width and have an inclined lower face c. The cutting-elements e, which may have two cutting-edges f, g, are of uniform width along the inclined lower edge hand taper outwardly in the direction of serrations i lying at right angles to the edge h. The locking- wedge is of similar form to the cutter and has a projecting rib l of arcuate form which is adapted to fit in a corresponding groove in one side of the recess b. One side of the rib is tangential to the lower inclined edge of the wedge which rests on the corresponding face c of the recess and is thus firmly held against radial or lateral movement. The front of the wedge has serrations similar to those on the cutting element. After positioning the wedge the cutter is driven into position and either axial or radial adjustments of the cutters may be effected by engaging the cutter serrations with appropriate serrations on the wedge. When both axial and radial adjustment is required a shim is inserted behind the wedge plate. The cutters may project by different amounts from the recesses. The cutters and wedge plate may have a 4‹ taper and to facilitate the removal of the cutters a tool may be inserted through a suitable aperture q. Instead of the rib l one or more pegs may be used to secure the wedge plate in position. In some cases the serrations may be arranged parallel to either the face or side cutting edges and the faces c may be disposed parallel to the peripheral cutting edges. |
