PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter capable of quickly and correctly restarting an engine at an automatically stopped state. SOLUTION: An engine starter is designed to restart the engine by injecting a fuel into cylinders being in a substantial expansion stroke, and igniting the same when the engine is in the automatically stopped state and restart conditions are satisfied. The starter comprises an engine speed detecting means for detecting the engine speed when the engine is restarted; and a restart control means of ECU30 which judges the quality of starting state on the basis of detected engine speed within a period of time after the time of the engine start, until a time when a piston passes the top dead center thereof in a second cylinder following that in a first cylinder or a time adjacent thereto, and actuates a starter 31 to assist the engine in restarting when it judges the engine is not started well.
