1,144,865. Copolymers of substituted N-vinyl amides. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 1 June, 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 25237/67. Heading C3P. An aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of a substituted N-vinyl amide is obtained by copolymerizing, in an aqueous medium at a pH of 3 to 9 and in the presence of a catalyst, at least one compound of the formula:- in which R 1 is alkyl, R 2 and R 3 are alkyl or together form a ring, and n is 1, 2 or 3, and one or more other monomers each having a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, the substituted N-vinyl amide(s) forming 0À1-4% of the polymerizable mixture of monomers. The specified amide is N-vinyl-N-(3<SP>1</SP>-dimethylaminopropyl)-acetamide, while exemplified comonomers are vinylisobutyrate, vinyl acetate, the vinyl ester of a mixture of monobasic branched aliphatic saturated carboxylic C 9 -C 11 acids, cyclohexane carboxylic acid vinyl ester, ptoluic acid vinyl ester, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, butylacrylate, and acrylonitrile. Other compounds present in the exemplified co - polymerization include trimethyl soybean oil ammonium chloride, oxyethylated nonylphenol, and polyvinyl alcohol.
