A process for applying adhesive tape sections (1') onto surfaces of products (3), especially vehicle components, comprises using an application unit (10). A control signal is generated using a sensor (9), which is used in the tape separation stage. The sensor produces a signal when a fixed point is identified on the product. The fixed point consists of a marking, raised section or depression. A switching module (6) determines the time when the separation stage should take place. The arrangement used comprises an application wheel in the form of a vacuum wheel, a rotating blade, an opposing wheel and a stop unit.
