A rocket-powered spacecraft with a wing (17) havint hinged portions (21, 22) which can be elevated about a hinge line (23). Tail booms (24, 25) extend rearwardly from the outer ends of the aft wing portions, and rudders (29) ar e mounted at the aft ends of the booms. Each tail boom supports a horizontal tail with an elevon (28) at its trailing edge. In normal flight, the wing ha s a normal airfoil shape and during re-entry, the aft wing portions are steepl y elevated to provide stable high-drag decent. The high-drag decent reduces speed and thermal loading. After decent the wing is Returned to an unelevate d position for gliding flight to a horizontal landing.
