PURPOSE: Provided are an asymmetric disulfide compound which has a high refractive index and a high Abbe's number and can be used to produce an optical material having excellent heat resistance, weather resistance and transparency and its preparation method. CONSTITUTION: The asymmetric disulfide compound is obtained by reacting (A) an O-alkyl-S-substituted sulfenylthiocarbonate and (B) a thiol. Preferably the O-alkyl-S-substituted sulfenylthiocarbonate is obtained by reacting an alkoxycarbonylsulfenyl halide compound and a thiol. Preferably the thiol (B) is 2,3-epithiopropylmercaptan and the thiol used in the preparation of the component (A) is 1,2-dimercaptoethane, 1,2,3-trimercaptopropane, trimercaptomethane or dimercaptomethane; or the thiol (B) is 1,2-dimercaptoethane, 1,2,3-trimercaptopropane, trimercaptomethane or dimercaptomethane, and the thiol used in the preparation of the component (A) is vinyl mercaptan or 2,3-epithiopropylmercaptan.
