PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a droplet discharge device and a method for detecting a head abnormality and recovering from it, which accurately detects the thickening of an ink in an inkjet head when a cap is tightly contacting a droplet discharge head, and performs an appropriate recovery process in accordance with the degree of thickening when the thickening of an ink is detected. SOLUTION: The droplet discharge device has a plurality of droplet discharge heads (head unit 35) discharging a liquid in the form of droplets from a nozzle communicating with a cavity by varying pressure in the cavity filled with the liquid by driving an actuator by a driving circuit, the cap covering the plurality of droplet discharge heads during a quiescent time, a time counting means 25 counting the quiescent time of the plurality of droplet discharge heads, and a head abnormality detection means 10 detecting the abnormality of the droplet discharge heads.
