PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved sponge applicator for coating the outer surface of a vessel such as a glass or plastic bottle with a liquid, and to provide an improved contact type applicator. SOLUTION: The sponge applicator has an open cellular foamed body for coating at least one surface of the bottle with the liquid in contact with the bottle, wherein the foamed body has a sealed surface that delays or inhibits the flowing of the liquid in its at least one part from the sponge. The sponge has an inner porosity so that the liquid can circulate through the open pores of the sponge. The method for sealing the surface of the open cellular foamed body comprises the steps of swelling the foamed body by the liquid, removing the excessive liquid from the sponge and curing the same. The improved contact type applicator of the bottle has a means to rotate the bottle, the sponge applicator with a plurality of the sealed surfaces and at least one unsealed surface, a means to bring the bottle into contact with the unsealed surface of the sponge applicator and a means to supply the coating solution to the sponge applicator.
