PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-screen display device capable of effectively using a video RAM (random access memory) area. SOLUTION: The on-screen display device is constituted by being equipped with a video RAM 200 which holds character data of a desired character to be displayed, a display character setting means 100 of arranging in the video RAM 200 bits as many as the remainder obtained by dividing character data of each character by the number of bits readable by single access to the video RAM 200 together by one line, buffers 501 and 502 storing part of character data of respective characters, a character generator ROM (read only memory) 400 which outputs corresponding font data according to character codes, and a display control means 300 which reads character data out of the video RAM 200 through the buffers 501 and 502 and reads the font data generated by the character generator ROM 400 to output an on-screen output signal.
