A piston (14) fixes a sleigh (12) for one of the coupling half- sections in the locking position and a releasable pressure maintaining valve (19) is used to maintain the pressure in the piston to keep the sleigh fixed in this position. The device comprises a fixed coupling half-section (9) and a movable coupling half-section (8) mounted on a sleigh. A piston- cylinder unit is used to move the two half-sections towards or away from each other so that they become (dis)engaged.
