The present invention is directed to a method for treating inflammatory bowel disease in a patient comprising administering to said patient a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharamaceutically effective amount of an anti-malarial compound in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and/or excipient that delays and targets the release of the anti-malarial compound in the gastrointestinal tract of the patient.
