PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet head protective mechanism of an ink jet printer for preventing a medium being fed onto a platen below an ink jet head from touching nozzles arranged on the lower surface of the ink jet head. SOLUTION: The ink jet head protective mechanism comprises a light emitting element 100 and a light receiving element 110 provided on the legs 12 of an ink jet head supporting arm elevating/lowering together with an ink jet head 10, and a control means 130 for elevating the ink jet head 10 through an ink jet head elevating/lowering means 50 when a light shielding state is brought about between the light emitting element and the light receiving element, and lowering the ink jet head 10 through the ink jet head elevating/lowering means 50 when a medium 30 is not present on a line 120 connecting the light emitting element and the light receiving element and a light conducting state is brought about between the light emitting element and the light receiving element.
