PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication apparatus and a facsimile machine whereby a user can grasp a transmission state even when the user is not resident beside the apparatus during transmission of facsimile data or the like. SOLUTION: A modem 54 detects a frequency of a signal tone received by an NCU 55 after a facsimile machine 1 makes a call to an opposite facsimile machine 2 via a public switched telephone network 100 until the facsimile machine 1 receives a response to the call from the facsimile machine 2, and particularizes a kind of the signal tone on the basis of the frequency. Further, the facsimile machine 1 references a light emitting table 53a to which the kind of the signal tone and the color corresponding to the signal tone are set and lights up a backlight section 56 in a color in response to the kind of the signal tone.
