PURPOSE: An MLSS maintenance method is provided to enable advanced treatment facility to be installed in case of an existing facility and substantially reduce construction cost in case of a newly installed facility by increasing concentration of MLSS in reaction tank without expansion of sedimentation basin facility. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of repeatedly alternately operating the plural reaction tanks under the anaerobic conditions and aerobic conditions to operate the reaction tanks as a presettling basin in an advanced biological wastewater treatment plant in which a plural reaction tanks(20) and sedimentation tanks(30) are installed, and performing the presettling process under the anaerobic conditions, wherein influent and return sludge are flown in or discharged from reaction tanks only, wherein the reaction tanks are operated anaerobically without agitation in such a way that presettling is generated to maintain high concentration of MLSS without increase of quantity of return sludge, wherein sufficient aeration time is provided by alternately operating one anaerobic tank and one to five aerobic tanks formed according to the total number of the reaction tanks, and wherein a plural porous baffle walls are installed in the reaction tanks to prevent generation of short circuit.
