Apparatus for in-situ nondestructive acoustic measurement of young's modulus of plate structures

The apparatus has a transducer to initiate an elastic extensional-mode wave propagating through a plate (10) along an in-plane direction. A sensor (18,20) spaced apart from the transducer, detects the wave arrival. A processor calculates a material stiffness of the plate along the direction based on a distance (d) and an elapsed time between an initiation of the wave and the arrival of the wave at the sensor.
