Multiple sensors (101,103) are arranged in matrix form or annular form to detect ambient light. A signal detector receives the measurement signals from the sensors, and generates an user input when any one of the light sensor is shadowed by user action such as by closing with finger accordingly. An independent claim is also included for portable electronic device.
