[Also in Division H5] Containers having a metal cap and a cover membrane squeezed between the cap and container neck are conveyed under an induction coil system which heats the cap to soften thermoplastic material included in or on the membrane, or on the container's lip. This causes removable adherence to the container. The inductance system may consist of two coils, one, 4, oblong and one, 5, circular, the latter lying within the former. The containers move into the influence of the larger coil 4 causing moderate heating of the cap prior to passing under the small coil 5, which gives a momentary boost of heat to soften the thermoplastic material to its sealing condition. This condition is maintained long enough for sealing to take place by the influence of the downstream tail of the larger coil, the heat generated by this coil alone not being capable of causing softening. The arrangement thus avoids scorching the cap's lacquer finish. A resilient pad can be fitted in the cap, and lightly attached to the membrane, to increase the pressure on the membrane, but detaching from it when the cap is removed. |
