Preparation of a printing plate involves fixing a printing plate material (3), that is formed of image formation layer (10) on a support, onto a fixing member (12) by suction through-holes (2) with surface of the support opposite the image formation layer facing the fixing member; and imagewise exposing the fixed material to laser to form an image. A degree of flatness of the surface on the image formation layer side of the fixed printing plate material is not > 50 mu m. The image formation layer or hydrophilic layer of the printing plate material contains a light-to heat conversion material. An independent claim is included for the printing plate material.
