Apparatus and method for determining oil change based upon oil viscosity

An engine control module (12) includes an algorithm which determines the viscosity of the lubricating oil (20) of an engine using measured oil temperature, oil pressure and engine rpm. The algorithm determines whether the lubricating oil is in a preferred operating range using the determined oil viscosity and a fresh-oil viscosity. A look up table has oil viscosity measurements as a function of oil pressure. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an engine oil change indicating method; (b) an engine oil change determining apparatus.
