Modified alkyd resins are made by reacting a medium or long drying oil modified alkyd with a monoisocyanate in the substantial absence of water. Reaction is effected in the presence or absence of an inert solvent (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon) possibly in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. a cobalt salt, an organo-tin compound, an alkali metal phenate or a tertiary amine) and up to 20% excess of monoisocyanate may be used which excess is distilled off at the end of the reaction. Specified alkyds are those derived by reacting (a) one or more of glycerol, erythritol and pentaerythritol, (b) one or more of phthalic acid and isophthalic acid and (c) one or more of linseed oil, soya oil or safflower oil or their fatty acids. Specified isocyanates are C 2-7 alkyl isocyanates; cyclohexyl, cycloheptyl and cyclo-octyl isocyanates; and phenyl, tolyl and naphthyl isocyanates. Paints and varnishes are made by dissolving the modified alkyd in a liquid vehicle and possibly adding a pigment (e.g. titanium dioxide) or a metallic drier (e.g. a lead/cobalt drier).</p> |
