[Also in Division P2] A combined engine gear-box unit M for a motor vehicle comprises two variable-speed gears D, E having a common output shaft F and driven in parallel from an engine crank-shaft A through a powder clutch B and intermediate shaft C, and control means I which effect ratio shift simultaneously in both gears. For forward drive an axially slidable gear 11 is moved right to clutch the output shaft F to a freely rotatable gear G which drives a differential gear H. Reverse is provided by moving the gear 11 left to mesh an idler 5 driven by the intermediate shaft C. The variable-speed gears D, E may be hydrostatic transmissions (Fig. 3, not shown) having swash plate pump and motor units. The pump swash plate angles are varied by the control means. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the gears D, E are continuously variable friction gears of the type having interpenetrating friction discs. The control means varies the distance between the axes of the discs for ratio shift. |
