The method involves protecting interruption of flow of force transmission between an internal combustion engine (30) and drive wheel. The combustion engine is actuated by an electric motor (36). A control apparatus (10) is synchronized with the combustion engine such that the apparatus detects a position of the combustion engine. The apparatus is placed in a rest mode until a need for starting. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a control apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine of a vehicle; and (b) a computer program for a method of controlling an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
