PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus and a method for controlling the apparatus are provided to obtain developing efficiency robust against a variation in a printing environment. CONSTITUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a current detector(32) and a controller(36). The current detector detects the quantity of current flowing through a developing roller(12) from a predetermined voltage supplied from a power supply(38). The controller controls the power supply to supply a developing bias voltage level corresponding to the quantity of current, detected by the current detector, to the developing roller.
