1,146,048. Sealed accumulators. W. GREUTERT. 7 April, 1966 [8 April, 1965; 3 Sept., 1965], No. 15756/66. Heading H1B. In the manufacture of an accumulator for gas-tight and leak-proof operation, the electrolyte is concentrated with the accumulator housing open by overcharging with a current intensity of at least C/6, where C is the charging capacity of the accumulator in ampere-hours, until gas evolution ceases, and then the accumulator is closed in gas-tight and leak-proof manner. Optionally the electrolyte may be concentrated by simultaneously heating and overcharging the accumulator. When the accumulator has been closed and is in use, it does not develop any detrimental internal overpressure provided the current intensity does not exceed that used initially. The electrolyte may be aqueous alkali or sulphuric acid. The concentration of the electrolyte may be carried out with the accumulator in a chamber in which the temperature, water-vapour pressure and partial pressures of hydrogen and oxygen are controlled. |
