PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for controlling an image acquisition device are provided to photograph a still picture by inputting a key signal once while a motion picture is being photographed without stopping the operation of photographing the motion picture. CONSTITUTION: An image acquisition device includes a memory(250) for storing data of photographed motion picture and still picture, a motion picture buffer(222) for storing image data of the motion picture, and a still picture buffer(223) for storing one frame of currently photographed image data when a specific key for photographing a still picture is pushed while a motion picture is being photographed. The device further includes a still picture encoder(232) for encoding the image data stored in the still picture buffer and storing the encoded data in the memory, and a motion picture encoder(231) for encoding the image data stored in the motion picture buffer and storing the encoded image data in the memory when photographing of the motion picture is finished.
