A carrier bag has handles formed from strips of paper (2) having a reinforcing layer of woven textile fabric (3) bonded to or embedded in it, the fabric layer (3) having a width at least equal to that of the handgrip. The strip is folded, as at 11 or 12, into a U-shape and is adhesively secured at its free ends to the outside of the bag. Reinforcing strips 15 or sheets 16, 17 are secured to the inner walls of the bag. The reinforcing strip may extend around the complete periphery of the bag top. The side edges of the handle strip may be folded inwardly over its length between pairs of opposed recesses 5, 6 formed adjacent the end securing portions of the handle. A covering strip (26, Fig. 8) or patches (27, 28, Fig. 9) may be adhered to the bag to overlie the end securing portions of the handle.
